Strap & finishing knots

Braid a strap that lasts, and learn the knots that keep it safe for years.

Intermediate40 min5 steps

  1. Step 1

Cut three cords, each twice the length you want the finished strap. Anchor all three to one rim ring of the bag with a lark's head knot.

  2. Step 2

Knot segments along the middle strip only, then braid: after every knot, cross the two outer strips over the middle. The braid grips each knot so the strap keeps its shape.

  3. Step 3

Every ten knots, pull the whole braid gently from both ends to even out the tension, and hold the strap against your shoulder to check the length.

  4. Step 4

Fasten the far end to the opposite rim ring with two half hitches, then feed the strip tails back through the last five knots.

  5. Step 5

Finish with a locking knot: tie a tight overhand knot around the standing cord, add a small drop of clear glue, and trim the ends flush once it is dry.
