Reading a knot pattern

Learn to read a chart so any MaMaBao pattern makes sense at a glance.

Beginner20 min4 steps

  1. Step 1

A knot pattern is a simple grid: one square is one knot, one line is one row. The bottom line is always the first row you weave.

  2. Step 2

The two colours printed on the chart match the two strip colours in your kit. Tick off each finished row with a pencil so you never lose your place.

  3. Step 3

Odd rows read left to right and even rows right to left — the same direction your cord travels. If you are unsure, follow the small arrows in the margin.

  4. Step 4

Count before you knot: check the knot count of the next row against the chart before folding. Catching a miscount one row early saves undoing a whole evening's work.
